If you feel dizzy again, take some deep, cleansing breaths. Draw air in through your nose and exhale deeply out through your mouth. Breath very slowly and deeply and the dizzy feeling should subside. Usually when you're anxious, you begin to breath rapidly and then hyperventilate. Try to breath calmly and remind yourself to relax. You will soon become used to the procedures. Good luck.
Reply:you are nervous now =by the time you become a dentist ,you should be an old pro at it=needles blood and all=good luck

men dress shoesNealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-17580883603768696062010-05-15T18:08:00.003-07:002010-05-15T18:08:54.218-07:00Need Advice About School?I work in retail and barely make enough to pay my bills. I wanted to do Medical Billing and Coding and I looked into my options. I wanted to go to Heald but it cost $10,000 for their program. I found another class at a Adult Education Center that offered Medical Billing and Coding for $600. I'm taking the $600 class and so far I don't feel like it will help me to get a job or give me the training I need. Most of the time the teacher talks about her personal life or about some drama she had at her work place. If I drop the class I won't get my money back.

I want to go to Heald but its a lot of money. I was also thinking about doing Dental assisting which is offered at the community college and it won't cost me that much money. What should I do? Should I stay in my class? Should I go to another school?

Which career do you think is better Medical Billing or dental assisting? Thank you!!

Need Advice About School?
Finish the class but maybe you can speak to someone and get transfered? Or interrupt the instructor %26amp; ask class focused questions. Many B %26amp; C classes are fairly self taught from a work book anyway. Avoid that $10,000 school--you might not make that $ to pay back. I would seriously consider the dental as well. You may have problems finding a billing job in the end.
Reply:if you're not going to get your money back, you should at least finish the course to get a "degree" or "certificate" that says you completed this course.

after that, use that degree to help you find a job. if that doesn't work out, go to Heald or a community college.
Reply:You have the right to speak your concern to the teacher. Your paying a lot of money and you should be getting your money's worth. If she doesn't stop her story telling, etc. then go ask for a refund. You might get it.

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-67876148728567401972010-05-15T18:08:00.002-07:002010-05-15T18:08:38.303-07:00What does a dentist look for? Will a dental office be turned away from a part time dental assistant who is also going to school? What kind of hours could an assistant expect to work as part time... not # of hours but time frames like 8am - 12pm, etc. Would you recommend someone to go through a dental assisting program while getting their bachelors to get into dental school. Do you think it would have an effect on the educational performance to be working as an assistant while being a full time student?

What does a dentist look for?
There area I live (California) many assistants work part time. Usually DDS offices are only open 4 days a week. Or they have sooo many associates and are open 6 days a week that they will need lots of help. Interesting enough a few of my dental assist friends who did a vocational program, did it just as a bridge to hygiene school. It would not be a bad idea to do a assistant program, I think it will give you a GREAT view to see if you actually want to be a DDS. If you do it this way, your not paying thousands of dollars just to decide that maybe its not for you.

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-34951134705202881492010-05-15T18:08:00.001-07:002010-05-15T18:08:22.117-07:00I will only have to take 17 hours of college, what does this mean?i am going to a community college to study for Dental Assisting and it says for basic dental, it will be 17 hours and then advanced will take 21 hours. They will give you the name of the department head in that program to contact. See your doc about getting some help for it. Also since you are nervous about tryng dental assistant work why not look for a part time job as a dental assistant and work your way into it. It is scary but if you passed school and all your exams you are more than qualified to do the job. See your doc about the anxiety and get this treated and then go out and find something that interests you.
Reply:I can totally relate to your situation...I'm 26 and I haven't had a job for 2 years since I've been going to school full-time and just doing the school thing..I will be trying to find a job this summer and I am afraid about working and I am afraid that what I am getting my major in ..I'm afraid I won't succeed or do well at what I am working for...I think I am afraid of succeeding..
Reply:Your going to have to get over your fear and apprehension and get out there and apply for a job in your field of expertice.

You will find that working with people in a dental office will be pleasant and you will be doing them a lot of good.
Reply:It's probably all the stress thats making you feel that way. NO YOU ARE NOT SLACKING, I especially no how it feels to be scared to make adventurous decisions especially when I child is involved, I quit my job when I was 3 mnths prego, went back to school when my daughter was 3 mnths old, and I am getting ready to graduate in may, you have to take the whole dive girl, I know it's very difficult, but you have to push yourself to make a better future for you and your child, a career with benefits, healthcare, etc. Think of the benefits in the long run, the only bad decision is the one you never make. Good luck sweety.
Reply:It does sound like depression. I think you should talk to your doctor about what you are going through so you can get help if you need it or just talk to someone who will not judge you. Just listen with an open heart. Good Luck and I hope you do what you need very soon.
Reply:Fear can be paralyzing, and I think you already know that's what's going on.

You could pick up some motivational vids from the library. But they're going to tell you what you already know. You have to grab that dentist by the ... horns and GO FOR IT!

The longer you wait the harder it's going to feel.

Ultimately, most feel that same anxiety when going from school to our trained field. The awkwardness goes away REALLY fast, when you find yourself doing with ease the things that you are worrying about.

Take that first step and send out the applications.

Good Luck and remember, it's just another job. If you don't like it, move on and find another.
Reply:In my own opinion from what you have said it doesn't sound like depression. It's sounds like you've had a stressful and hard time over the past few years, you've been a busy girl, a lot of people couldn't take on all you have! It's sounds like you need some "me" time. Take some time out to try and figure out what it is you want to do in life. Everybody is nervous when getting their first "proper" job. But hey, you graduated as a dental assistant, so you have heaps going for you, it just sounds like you need to build up your confidence and have faith in yourself. Try talking to your family about what's going on in your head, they are there to support you.
Reply:I am sorry that you are facing this in an already stressful life. Please seek counseling. I cannot say that you are depressed for certain, but if this has been how you have felt for over a month, there is a strong possibility. Either way, counseling will help you understand and face your fears. Do it for your son. He needs you to be your best, so he can grow to be his best.
Reply:Depression/mental illness, has become a common excuse for slacking...

Might as well jump on the band wagon. I'm a 20 year old mother of a 15 month old, I'm a hard worker, graduated from highschool, worked 2 jobs after that, then graduated from college to become a dental assistant, while working a full time job.I'm a great mother, I have a great very loving boyfriend that my family hates with a passion.well, we basically hit rock bottom with our warehouse job and got laid off.i hated dental assisting, so that's why i never went back to the field, but i was being looked down on, critisized by my family, pressured to go into the dental field.almost every few days, i hear about my family talking crap about us. and we were broke, so i needed financial help.so i decided to change it. I looked for a dental assisting job, scored some interviews, my boyfriend got his job back, and they're still not satisfied! but they can't talk, they all work dead end jobs.they won't stop talking about me, i can't even go to family functions without them talking!

Why is my family constantly talking crap about me?! how do i get them to stop???
Like the old saying we cant choose our family but we can choose our friends. Try to look at your family as friends . Good Luck
Reply:hey nikki,

honey, first of all, NEVER LET YOUR FAMILY TELL YOU HOW YOUR LIFE SHOULD BE LIVED! you are the one that has to live it and deal with the decisions that you make, not them. you have to raise your baby, not them. you are in the relationship, NOT THEM. i find from experience that family will "pop their chops" when they are jealous, threatened by your success, or just to make them feel better. girl, i got married at 15 to a 22 year old, so you know i heard alot of talk, but guess what, they are all still single or in miserable relationships and my hubby and i just celebrated 13 years of marriage and we are sooooooooooooo happy STILL. my point is although they are your family and some may honestly think that they are "doing this in your best interest" leave them in the dark, dont tell them no decisions that you and your boyfriend make, you are grown and have to answer to no one but God. if you continue to live your life the way they want you to, you will NEVER be truly happy, think about that.

Be Blessed
Reply:Don't put up with it ,maybe you made some mistakes;we all do, but if they are constantly bashing you then its time to cut ties with them at least for a while.

You are young and it would be nice to have family support(emotional) with a new baby and all but if they are hell bent on

judging/putting you down then stop letting them hurt you.

Just work hard as a Dental Asst. for now since you already went through School for it, you have financial troubles and a young child so it's better to stick with what you know until you have some savings and can look for something else you might enjoy.

Keep your chin up and your distance from your relatives, while making a Great Life with your Boyfriend and Baby. Hopefully your family will realize they miss you in their lives.
Reply:You family is being pretty mean. I'm sure they are just very worried for you, and they are concerned, but let them know you dont appreciate how they are behaving. Lay it all out, tell them straight up. Dont take crap from anybody, noone ever deserves it. So many people have been in the same situation...even me. It's normal. Just gotta go with the flow, and enjoy life.
Reply:Do what I did, tell them to kiss your pretty little a** goodbye and leave!!!!

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-87078444917932699672010-05-15T18:07:00.001-07:002010-05-15T18:07:18.709-07:00What should i put on my resume when im changing careers?ok, about 5 years ago i was dental assisting in a dental office. I got out of that and got into childcare and am now a nanny. So for the last 4 years i have excellent childcare experience with excellent childcare references. Well, now i want to get back into dental assisting and employers would like for me to submit a resume. I have an excellent nanny resume but dont even have one for my jobs back when i was younger. I cant even remember exact dates of employment and if a new employer calls them for references they probably will not even know me. So my question is, should i just make up a "dental assisting" resume and not include my last 4 years of employment as a nanny seeing as how it would have nothing to do with the job i am applying for? Or include ALL employment no matter what job i am applying for. And what if i cant remember employment dates??????

What should i put on my resume when im changing careers?
I think I would include all emplyment so it does not look like you have employment gaps in your resume

The date issue is an interesting one - If you have your old tax records that might help you

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-45429343385522517052010-05-15T18:07:00.000-07:002010-05-15T18:07:02.906-07:00This question is for II-Smarty?The books and things I need are

Custom keys to success with Planner and Journal RVP \ ISBN- 0-13-205952-5 / Pearson,

Modern Dental Assisting 8E Package \ 1-416-02331-3 \ Saunders,

Dental Radiography Principles and Techniques 3E \ 0-7216-1575-3 \ Saunders,

Mosebys Dental Dictionary \ 0-323-02510-2 \ Mosby,

Canadian Office Adminitrator 1E \ 0-17-606985-2 \ Nelson,

Mcbees Dental Kit \ 000-000-9301 \ NEBS,

Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist \ 0-7817-4090-8 \ Login Brother,

Essentials of the Intra Oral Dental Assisting \ holland Colle

This question is for II-Smarty?
Man looks like you need a lot, sorry I don't have anything you have listed. Even if they do charge for it it wont be nearly as much as private dentists charge
Reply:Why not just pick a dentist and make an appointment during regular office hours as this would be a heck of a lot cheaper than using an after hourse service.
Reply:ive used this service several times like an emergency,i do not work at the moment so i got the treatment for free if you work it depends on what you have done and what you must pay and depending on your circumstance you may be given time to pay, hope this has helped
Reply:yes if you normally pay for NHS treatment..i am a dental nurse in one of theses clinics..the cost would come under the band 1 treatment plan which is £15.50
Reply:The actual call out costs nothing but you have to pay for any treatment you recieve(if you normally pay for treatment).

The charges for NHS treatment are the same whether it is at an normal appointment or as an emergency.
Reply:If you have to pay NHS charges for dental treatment then you have to pay for treatment out of hours. A lot of people go to these clinics, which are supposed to be for dental emergencies only, because they think they're free.

If you are entitled to free treatment, please take along proof of exemption.

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-41924611523775931342009-11-16T20:13:00.002-08:002009-11-16T20:13:44.598-08:00Volunteering in a dental office?id like to get myself involved with dentistry before i apply to dental school. what types of work would a dentist have me perform if i were to vounteer at an office. obviously i couldnt assist him/her, seeing i dont have any prior experience, but what other types of work could i do?

id appreciate it if someone with this experience, be it an assistant or actual doctor, answer this question, but anyone will do. thanks!

Volunteering in a dental office?
I'll agree with emmalue. You really won't be able to DO anything clinical or related to clinical procedures. You are not OSHA-trained, you have not had your hepatitis vaccination and there are liability issues.

You would be able to watch, though. This sounds kind of lame, but after a week of visitation for 3-4 hours per day, you will have a better sense of what goes on in a dental office.

Now I'll disagree with emmalue. Frankly, I'd say that you would not gain very much by filing or dumping trash cans and you'd be wasting valuable time that could be spent observing and learning if this is the right career for you. Make it clear that you are not there for those purposes.
Reply:They'll probably have you assist with administrative duties. Typical office duties would include filing, setting up appointments, answering phones, etc.
Reply:I pondered your question for a while since I went to school a long time ago and became a dental assistant and worked in the field about one year afterwards and that work wasn't what I wanted to keep doing. In a large office there may be some paperwork you could do or possibly being the one to do the cleaning routine of the instruments used between patients. My advice, go talk with some dentists and see if they want to help you out with your request.
Reply:Our office frequently takes on unpaid job-shadow positions. The perfect candidate can fit into the clinical setting and know when to watch and when to back off.

Some offices are naturally teaching offices, where the doctors love to explain what they are doing while they work.

If you want to have such a position, I would urge you to talk about your willingness to do whatever is needed in the office - from emptying waste bins to setting up trays. An eager learner will be given good opportunities to do hands-on training.

Dress appropriately, watch your verbiage (none of the, "ooooh, bood! how gross!!), and show a willingness to work with the team. Interview with several offices and find one that is a good fit.
Reply:The best place to start is with your own dentist. Tell him of your plans to apply to dental school and ask for his help. He will probably be happy to allow you to come in and observe him at his work. Yes, since you don't have any experience you wouldn't be able to do really anything but you can gain a lot of knowledge by watching and listening. To observe for a few days will give you a good idea of what it's all about. You may be excited about your career choice or you may be thankful that you did some research before jumping in head over heels. I'm sure your dentist will give you insight into dentistry and be delighted to assist you in making your decision about joining this profession. Good luck and I hope you'll check with your dentist and enjoy every minute of your time there.
Reply:KRISTINA,

PROBABLY THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO CALL A DENTAL OFFICE AND SPEAK WITH THE OFFICE MANAGER. REALIZE THAT DENTAL OFFICES ARE NOT TRAINING GROUNDS FOR SOMEONE WALKING IN FROM THE STREET, BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD DECIDE WHAT IN DENTISTRY ATTRACTS YOU TO IT. One of my friends took a trip with her church to the Dominican Republic to assist dentists for a week. I am looking for a trip similar to this but no churches in my area offer these types of medical missions. Do you know of any places I could go to get information about a trip like this???

Undergraduate dental trips??
Give the American Dental Association's mentoring program a try. You may have to be Mormon for a while, but they are well known in the dental field for their choice of locations with poor dentistry.
Reply:I went to a search engine and entered in "Churches doing Undergraduate dental trips" and several popped up. The search engine I used was "Blingo" but probably MSN or Yahoo would find some, too. Good luck, I hope you find one!
Reply:That's wonderful of you to think of others. Here's a link I found:

http://www.medicalteams.org/site/PageSer...

I just did a quick google search under volunteer dental international or charity dental international. You can always contact your local dental school and ask them if they are in any way affiliated with a charitable group that does this. It's such a wonderful cause, when in our country many people choose not to go to the dentist out of fear or laziness, these folks in the poorest places will walk all day to get to a temporary clinic and pray to be seen by a dentist. Good luck to you!

prom dress shoesNealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-42391955473161883762009-11-16T20:12:00.003-08:002009-11-16T20:12:57.459-08:00I'm in pain everday with dental issues. How or where can I receive help? I need upper partial dentures bad.I'm an Honorably Discharged Veteran, Viet Era, USAF. I don't have any disability percentage, but I have medical conditions since my service which can be described as disabilitating. I'm a Diabetic, have High Colesterol, High Blood Pressure and (2) Herniated Discs. plus, flat feet. My problems were hurting me such that I was released from military service early, after repetitive visits to the infirmary for help. I was released thinking I would be assisted with disability after release, but to this day have received none (1972 to present). Today, I also have excessive dental problems causing me continuous pains and agony, but the VA will not assist me, nor point me somewhere to get assistance.I'm presently unemployed, though receiving unemployment compensation

I'm in pain everday with dental issues. They do not give it to you automatically. If you were in Viet Nam and now are diagnosed with type II diabetes, you automatically qualify for service connected disability. If you cannot get any assistance from the Vet Rep at the VA, almost any VFW or DAV organization can help you apply or you can apply online at http://www.va.gov/ good luck!!!
Reply:Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.

Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.

Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.

I personally offer free care or reduced fee care or "overlook the bill" care when I know the exact circumstances of a person's financial position. If they have had a medical hardship, for instance, I am sympathetic. You can't come in just looking for free care, though. You have to come in with the intentions of doing the best you can and then I decide exactly how I am going to handle the financial aspect. I can usually tell who is actually trying to pay and who simply wants to skip out on me. I do not usually consider smokers to be in financial need, though. If they can find a couple thousand dollars a year for cigarettes, they could find the same amount of money and fix almost any dental problem. Maybe you can find a local dentist who has the same attitude.

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-70403050292148871372009-11-16T20:12:00.002-08:002009-11-16T20:12:41.443-08:00Free or inexpensive dental insurance that covers major dental procedures?I currently have dental insurance with my employer however, I need major dental procedures done such as a possible root canal, porcelain veneers, fillings, etc. Does anyone know of any programs in the state of Texas that can assist with most or all of the expenses not covered by my dental plan?

Free or inexpensive dental insurance that covers major dental procedures?
Apply for Canadian citizenship. Single mommy plan to go to dental school this late in life?I have been a Dental Assistant for 7 yrs and now I am the practice manager. My boyfriend of 3 yrs is a dentist and I love dreaming of being a dentist one day myself. I live alone with my two toddlers. I have saved more money for their college ed than I have for my own. I would basically start from ground up b/c I have no degree. I am doing classes online now but I cannot do much with the kids and my job assisting and managing. In 2009 both of my tots will start school, should I start school too? Should my late start and family/marital status affect my acceptance? PLEASE BE HONEST!

Should a 27 Y.O. Single mommy plan to go to dental school this late in life?
Realisticly speaking, no. You need a 4-year degree which I assume will take you longer because you'll be working and handling your kids. If that extends to say 7 years, you'll still need to do dental school full-time. It also is doubtful that they will accept you because of your age. I know medical schools don't admit people over 26 (I think). If you do get accepted, that will take you a few more years. I'm not sure how many, but it should be in the vecinity of 3 to 5 years. All that time you'll need to have enough money saved for your children, yourself and your studies. This all means that you'll need to be in school for the next 10 years or so, while involuntary neglect happens towards your children and your relationships.

I will tell you that you should try to do the community college thing first. If it doesn't work out for you in the years you're there, you will know it is best not to transfer and continue persuing this goal.

Good luck.
Reply:THANK YOU SHAWNA P FOR THE BEST ANSWER, SORRY I DID NOT HAVE THE CHANCE TO RATE IT BEFORE NOW!!!!!! Report It

Reply:no because you should never let age keep you from being something you would want to be someday!!!
Reply:Go for it, you will be glad you did.
Reply:To be blunt, HELL YES you should go back to school.

It will NOT be easy by any means, but I'm sure raising kids isn't either. You don't have to give up dreams just because of a family. In fact, this is a great reason to go back to school so you can make sure you can provide the kind of life you want for yourself and your kids

Good luck!
Reply:Yes she should. Better a little late then never. The extra 50 thousand a year (thats alot of loot) at any point in life is going to be very useful. And as for marital status, yes it will effect you in a possitive manor. You will most definatly get more funding being single with two children.
Reply:Why not? Of course you should. You're never too late nor too old to learn something, to gain experience, to fight for your satisfaction, to pursue your dreams?

Besides, are you that sure that you and your boyfriend will still be together some time from now? The more learning you have the better to help in your financial indpendence.

Who told you that 27 years or as a matter of fact even 60 years is old?

I'll tell you a little story or fable:

Once upon a time there was a competition among rabbits, the toughest and physically best had to climb up a greased pole and get the bagfull of carrots hanging there.

Everyone was shouting "There's no way to de this... it's no use... give it up..." etc. etc.

Indeed, all of these tough and sporty guys tried and came tumbling and slithering down the pole.

Finally, a skinny, weak-looking, little fellow came along, walking towards the pole. I might add that I was a deckhand working 84 hous a week and doing full time classes, and taking care of the kids 40 hours a week while she was at work. No, I didn't get much sleep, and yea, I was a real pain in the asss, but I got it done. Your never to old to improve your life especially when it comes to finances. Retirement is becoming a thing of the past. You really gotta get somewhere fast and start saving. The sooner your a dentist and can start puttin more away the better.
Reply:I am fully in support of your continuing your education. I am in the same process myself- I am a dental assistant who decided I want to become a dentist. I had my bachelor's degree, although not in science, so I have spent the past 3 years basically doing my undergraduate work over again at the community college (it's only $20 a unit). From my experience, I suggest you go for it, but you will need some help. Do you have family that can help you financially, or by providing child care?

Set realistic expectations. It will be very hard academically, but admissions committees do not discriminate on age, I don't care what any one else has told you.

I actually applied this year and had interviews at several schools. I met a 33 year old first year dental student with 3 kids. I know that admissions committees are impressed by individuals that have overcome hardships. I also know that they care a lot about GPA and DAT scores, you need to be prepared to make a lot of A's in very difficult science classes that will require a lot of studying. I think the pre-dental work- chemistry, organic chemisty, physics, biology- are actually MORE difficult than what you do in dental school! (If you've been an assistant like we have, and all the dental terminology and procedures are so familiar to you that you could do them in your sleep, with or without a DDS degree...)

The road is long and exhausting. Committees give preference to individuals that have finished a 4 year bachelor's degree, and they also have limits on the amount of your education that can be completed at the community college level. Community college credits can be difficult to transfer as well, and at this point you don't want to waste any time. I recommend you enter a bachelor's program that has a cooperative degree with dental schools which will allow you to attend 3 years of college, complete all your pre-dental pre-requisites, and then enter dental school (4 year program- there are a couple of 3 year programs out there- University of the Pacific in San Francisco- but it is a very expensive private school). Upon completion of your first year of dental school, you recieve your bachelor's degree, then 3 years later your DDS or DMD.

Look into state schools. They are more affordable. No matter what anyone tells you, you do NOT want to get out of school with over $200,000 of debt. You will be pressured to work hard to pay that back. What if youw ant to work part time? Be a Mom?

I am going to school in Texas- if you move there and gain residency, you can attend school as a resident for $15,000/ year (that includes the loans that cover living expenses as well as tution and supplies). At most other schools outside of Texas, tutition alone exceeds $20,000/ year, not to mention living expenses!

Good luck with everything!

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-40699245279730635022009-11-16T20:12:00.000-08:002009-11-16T20:12:08.961-08:00Are there nonprofits or other organizations that assist diabetics to improve smiles with dental implants?i reenrolled in college 2 years ago.i will graduate,12/08. i am diabetic, have hypertension, and am very excited about living life again. i was severly depressed for almost 17years. i have two wonderful teenage children whom i love and adore. yes i'm married to their father. life's been more than tough; by God's grace we managed to keep the family together so that the children could have some sense of normalcy. My battle scars are my teeth and loss of hair. i manage to conceal both as much as possible. i'm 48 with a new outlook on life. i feel like i've gotten a second wind. my 19 year old daughter just finished her second year at the local community college with a 4.0 GPA. Her brother is a good student presently in the 10th grade. The college scouts are looking at him already. i've seen so many makeovers with gorgeous teeth. two years ago i saw two of wash,d.c.'s greatest dentist. I understand that the costs are astronomical, but so many people are ready to have it done that it might be difficult to find a place where they make it for "cheap".

You know, dental implants are often considered as the best solution, but other good and cheaper solutions exist. Explore these! For example, a well-fitted partial denture can restore a smile satisfactorily in a majority of patients.

I know that it is possible to get surgery done for "cheap" in some countries... It's common for plastic surgery and it's increasingly popular for dental treatments. People doing it put their health at risk, since the treatments are often done in countries where the standards of care are lower than in the "Western World". And even though you get somebody competent, the follow-up can be impossible if you have problems... And good luck to find a dentist in D.C. willing to work with a "butched" surgery. U.S. and Canada have among the highest standards or dental practice in the world. Don't forget it!
Reply:Dental Cosmetic Treatment and Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges dental surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website

slippersNealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-12793821234414511182009-11-16T20:11:00.003-08:002009-11-16T20:11:53.279-08:00How much should an Registered dental assistant get paid per hour . I became an RDA recently in California.?
first where do you live? small or large town, will you work for a corporation or group or private practice? general or specialty? in southern calif you could make 12-16 easily but in order to push thru that threshold you will need to stay with that dr. for a while if you are hired at 16 dont expect to make 30-40 in 10-20 years, like wise if you leave a job which you have held for many years, and are being paid above 16 or 20 that reflects your value to that dr. not to a new dr. whom you dont now yet...
Reply:Depends on DA's Qs and patient patronage of the dentist!
Reply:I dont know about California but in KY DA's usually start around 7 per hour and top out around in the 9-10 dollar an hour range. Not nearly enough for what you know and do. A hygeinist however makes over 20 dollars per hour here. If your wanting to really get paid, check on a program and get back in school. You'll be glad you did 1 day and sooner than you think.
Reply:Personally, I don't believe that the certifications that an assistant carries, is what should decide what her salary is. I have seen RDA's and CDA's who are terrible chairside. Book knowledge and actual excellent chairside skills are two totally different things. You can't base a salary on the things that you mentioned. There are just too many variables. Do you have extensive knowledge of implants? How good are you at making temporaries? Could you make 12 units of temporaries in less than an hour and have them look and fit well?

No offense, but taking x-rays, taking impressions, pouring models, sterilization and normal chairside duties, are things that every assistant, whether they have 1 year or 10 years of experience, should know. It is all the "x-tras" that make the difference between a good assistant and a great assistant.

So that said, what are all the x-tra's that you know or can do? Those are what should determine your pay scale, not the normal things that any assistant should know.

But, just to give an actual dollar amount, I would say that you should make no less than $15.00 an hour. Anything above that, really depends on your specific skill level.
Reply:Ok well Im a dental assistant student myself. So u took Infection Control and Jurisprudence exams too. Did u went to school or u didnt? Depends on the paying an hour, this is what i was told, dont matter how many years of experience u have. If u work in general dentistry u will get paid about $10-15 an hour. If u work in the speciality areas like orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, or with the oral surgeons, u are going to get paid even more an hour than general dentistry. Its not hard to look for a job in this field, because they always need dental assistants.
Reply:not sure where you are but up here(western Canada) certified dental assistants start from $16-19 an hour, i started at $17.50 right outta school, but with exp. id say maybe $22... hygienists can get prob $45-60 easy,

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-13337701918021463032009-11-16T20:11:00.002-08:002009-11-16T20:11:36.080-08:00Im a dental nurse, and the female dentist i assist has really really bad B.O wot do i do?some times she smells fishy aswell how do i approach her about the situation and smell? it's unbareable!!!! i dread going to work everyday! i'm thinking of looking for a new job although i do not want to as i am very satisfied working there other than the smell!

Im a dental nurse, and the female dentist i assist has really really bad B.O wot do i do?
As a health issue, you owe it to the dentist, the patients, and yourself to say something. Such a hygene problem on the part of a healthcare professional will get around the community sooner or later, and could cost you work if the dentist loses clients.

I could be a culture-gap issue, if the dentist is from certain Third World countries, like India. I have known many people from India, and depending upon the social position (caste) of the person, they can either be as hygenic as most Americans, or they can sometimes be very unhygenic. The reasons for this can be many, but if she comes from a culture where water is scarce, then she may have been instilled with the idea that water is for drinking, not bathing.

And that's not only for those from poor countries: right here in the good ol' USA, my great grandparents used to bathe only on Saturday nights, as water was VERY scarce here in Southern California before 1913.

Be as understanding as possible, but do say something to her.
Reply:I am sorry to hear that, why don't you just casually say that a couple of the patients have mentioned a horrid smell during their treatments... That might work., or you could just tell her in the nicest way possible. Good luck
Reply:This is a tough situation. I certainly know, however, that I would want to know about this if I were the dentist. I mean, think about it. Her practice could really suffer since she has to get bodily close to patients to do her work. I know I wouldn't want to be treated by someone whose body odor was overpowering.

Try this. Find a private moment where you can pull her aside. Say that you noticed strong bodily odors during the last procedure and that you weren't sure where they were coming from (you, the patient or her) but that you thought she would want to know in case it might be something she put on this morning. Hopefully she will take it in the spirit of help it is meant and correct the problem. Obviously, you need to handle this delicately, because she's your boss. But you are doing her a favor by mentioning it.
Reply:maybe she is not aware of her b.o. you should tell her as nice as you can say it my hubby's nose is stuffed up 24-7 so when there is a bad smell in the house i have to figure out what it is and take care of it he never smells it and my granddad's nose don't work at all if you are lacking certain vitamins you lose your since of smell so she might just not know she stinks and needs some one to be brave enough to tell her!!!!

good luck I know that is not and easy job no one wants that job but I am sure she will be embarrassed but she should still be glad you told her!!!! really!!!!

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-68155843157779507482009-11-16T20:11:00.001-08:002009-11-16T20:11:21.516-08:00Dental Assistant Salary - Canada?I would like to know if anyone out there would like to share with me their hourly salary? MI. to assist clients. All are low income, most are uninsured in the dental dept. Some have limited health coverage. Our service helps people to resource.

Pro bono dental care in grand rapids mi?
I don't know of any probono, but teaching schools are a great resource for person's with little to no insurance. My dental hygiene school only charges $25 for adults and $15 for kids and seniors (that includes many things along with a cleaning, such as x-rays). Try looking up dental and dental hygiene schools in your area.

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047030516104874657.post-75949041030876293912009-11-16T20:10:00.002-08:002009-11-16T20:10:33.435-08:00Forgot the primer on a filling...? (For dental field people)? For any dental assistants or hygienists out there, I was assisting on a filling the other day, and accidently used the bond agent twice instead of primer then bond agent. Any idea how bad this is and what could happen?

Forgot the primer on a filling...? (For dental field people)?
It depends on the type of filling.

If it was an cavity with good thick enamel margins (like an occlusal), then the patient may experience some post-op pain as the filling could lift off the bottom of the cavity.

If it was an interproxmal posterior, then I would advise it being redone, as it is likely to lift off at the thin enamel margin near the cervical edge of the filling, and allow recurrent decay.

In the old days (showing my age), before we understood the need and chemistry of dentine bonding, marginal leakage and decay was a nasty problem with posterior composites, and many of us went back to amalgam.

Either way, discuss it with the dentist. We all make mistakes, but it's what we do when we recognise an error that shows our character.
Reply:I really hope you informed the patient and the Doctor...did you bill the patient ??

what could happen???

you tell the truth and then tell us what happened
Reply:AS LONG AS THE TOOTH WAS SUFFICIENTLY ETCHED BEFOREHAND THERE IS PROBABLY NOT MUCH THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE RESTORATION OR THE TOOTH.

DEFINITELY THE DENTIST MUST BE INFORMED.
Reply:the primer solves the smear layer which affect the strength of the bond between composit and tooth. so you should ask patient to come and refill his/her tooth. if you dont do this, the filling may leak and infect the tooth.
Reply:It will probably do fine. Primer ENHANCES the dentin bond. Remember, we were doing bonded restorations for about 15 years before they invented primer and they are still in place. The enamel is still bonded as well as it ever was, so the restoration will be sealed at the margins.

Just don't make a habit of it.... ;-)

~

Nealhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14190566814440585672noreply@blogger.com0
