What to study, Dental Assist or Surgical Tech? Help!! People please tell me about your jobs!?

I am taking classes and just applied to get into a Surgical Technology program, but the commute is AWFUL! I have to drive 2 1/2 hours a day! It's killing our semi-clunker cars, and I am wondering if it's worth it. There is a Dental Assisting program in my town, that would make my life easier, and the work schedules seem more consistant, which would be better for my kids, right? But I love surgeries, and hope that Surgical Tech would be a job I'd love. Are any of you either of these professions? Can you tell me about your hours and pay rate and if you like your job or not? Should I do what's best for my family and my sanity, or what I love? Please help! Thanks in advance for your input!

If you're looking for something with a much more competitive salary and more opportunities for using the job a a stepping stone to bigger things, become a surgical tech. At my hospital, we had the Red Cross teaching dental assisting to volunteers for free. You can't financially compete with a volunteer, so you would want to become an O.R. tech.

Of course, ultimately, you'll have to look at what's most practical for you right now. Based on my 17-year history of working as a surgical tech, I would highly recommend this career to anyone else.

As an O.R. tech, you'll be able to get work in nearly any city, working nearly any shift. If you have a level-1 trauma center nearby, they will have O.R. techs in-house 24-7, so you'll be able to find a shift to fit your life. Night and weekend shifts always pay more, as well. If your family can put up with you completing your training, they will thank you for it later, as most dental techs only work when their dentists work, that is, day shift only.
Reply:my sister was a DA for years. She always had a job and people would try to hire her away a lot. If you are good then you will be in demand.
