id like to get myself involved with dentistry before i apply to dental school. what types of work would a dentist have me perform if i were to vounteer at an office. obviously i couldnt assist him/her, seeing i dont have any prior experience, but what other types of work could i do?
id appreciate it if someone with this experience, be it an assistant or actual doctor, answer this question, but anyone will do. thanks!
Volunteering in a dental office?
I'll agree with emmalue. You really won't be able to DO anything clinical or related to clinical procedures. You are not OSHA-trained, you have not had your hepatitis vaccination and there are liability issues.
You would be able to watch, though. This sounds kind of lame, but after a week of visitation for 3-4 hours per day, you will have a better sense of what goes on in a dental office.
Now I'll disagree with emmalue. Frankly, I'd say that you would not gain very much by filing or dumping trash cans and you'd be wasting valuable time that could be spent observing and learning if this is the right career for you. Make it clear that you are not there for those purposes.
Reply:They'll probably have you assist with administrative duties. Typical office duties would include filing, setting up appointments, answering phones, etc.
Reply:I pondered your question for a while since I went to school a long time ago and became a dental assistant and worked in the field about one year afterwards and that work wasn't what I wanted to keep doing. In a large office there may be some paperwork you could do or possibly being the one to do the cleaning routine of the instruments used between patients. My advice, go talk with some dentists and see if they want to help you out with your request.
Reply:Our office frequently takes on unpaid job-shadow positions. The perfect candidate can fit into the clinical setting and know when to watch and when to back off.
Some offices are naturally teaching offices, where the doctors love to explain what they are doing while they work.
If you want to have such a position, I would urge you to talk about your willingness to do whatever is needed in the office - from emptying waste bins to setting up trays. An eager learner will be given good opportunities to do hands-on training.
Dress appropriately, watch your verbiage (none of the, "ooooh, bood! how gross!!), and show a willingness to work with the team. Interview with several offices and find one that is a good fit.
Reply:The best place to start is with your own dentist. Tell him of your plans to apply to dental school and ask for his help. He will probably be happy to allow you to come in and observe him at his work. Yes, since you don't have any experience you wouldn't be able to do really anything but you can gain a lot of knowledge by watching and listening. To observe for a few days will give you a good idea of what it's all about. You may be excited about your career choice or you may be thankful that you did some research before jumping in head over heels. I'm sure your dentist will give you insight into dentistry and be delighted to assist you in making your decision about joining this profession. Good luck and I hope you'll check with your dentist and enjoy every minute of your time there.
Reply:KRISTINA,
PROBABLY THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO CALL A DENTAL OFFICE AND SPEAK WITH THE OFFICE MANAGER. REALIZE THAT DENTAL OFFICES ARE NOT TRAINING GROUNDS FOR SOMEONE WALKING IN FROM THE STREET, BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD DECIDE WHAT IN DENTISTRY ATTRACTS YOU TO IT. THEN DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU LIKE, THEN RECEIVE THE TRAINING FOR THIS WHETHER IT'S ASSISTING, A HYGIENIST OR A DENTIST.THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS FOR WHAT THEY DO.
GOOD LUCK.

Where can I get cheap dental work or help finding dental insurance in DC/MD/Northern VA?
I am at a situation where I must get a root canal very soon since my tooth has an infection and the nerve must be removed.
I just got a crown on this tooth from my dentist who was kind enough NOT to warn me that an infection was possible.
This work used up all my allowance with my current dental insurance, so now I have to pay for any work done myself. It is very expensive and I am looking into the cheapest possible way. The dentist who did this, or my current insurance will not assist me.
Do you know any places I can go that would be cheaper? Or do you know if I can purchase a dental insurance that will help me cover the costs? Thank you

you might want to try dental school. They usually charge much less than a dentist and they need patient for their studies.
Reply:You might want to look into the eHealthPlus network. Their
dentists give members a substantial break, 50% or more
on dental work that you are describing.
Reply:You might want to consider getting world class dental treatment in India and get a vacation out of it at the same time.

Undergraduate dental trips??
I am an undergrad and I'm hoping to go to dental school. One of my friends took a trip with her church to the Dominican Republic to assist dentists for a week. I am looking for a trip similar to this but no churches in my area offer these types of medical missions. Do you know of any places I could go to get information about a trip like this???

Give the American Dental Association's mentoring program a try. They might offer such activities for you to participate in: http://ada.org/public/careers/beadentist...
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Reply:Contact the Church of Latter Day Saints. You may have to be Mormon for a while, but they are well known in the dental field for their choice of locations with poor dentistry.
Reply:I went to a search engine and entered in "Churches doing Undergraduate dental trips" and several popped up. The search engine I used was "Blingo" but probably MSN or Yahoo would find some, too. Good luck, I hope you find one!

I just did a quick google search under volunteer dental international or charity dental international. You can always contact your local dental school and ask them if they are in any way affiliated with a charitable group that does this. It's such a wonderful cause, when in our country many people choose not to go to the dentist out of fear or laziness, these folks in the poorest places will walk all day to get to a temporary clinic and pray to be seen by a dentist. Good luck to you!

I'm in pain everday with dental issues. How or where can I receive help? I need upper partial dentures bad.
I'm an Honorably Discharged Veteran, Viet Era, USAF. I don't have any disability percentage, but I have medical conditions since my service which can be described as disabilitating. I'm a Diabetic, have High Colesterol, High Blood Pressure and (2) Herniated Discs. plus, flat feet. My problems were hurting me such that I was released from military service early, after repetitive visits to the infirmary for help. I was released thinking I would be assisted with disability after release, but to this day have received none (1972 to present). Today, I also have excessive dental problems causing me continuous pains and agony, but the VA will not assist me, nor point me somewhere to get assistance.I'm presently unemployed, though receiving unemployment compensation

Most Va's have a veteran's representative who is there to assist you in applying for disability. They do not give it to you automatically. If you were in Viet Nam and now are diagnosed with type II diabetes, you automatically qualify for service connected disability. If you cannot get any assistance from the Vet Rep at the VA, almost any VFW or DAV organization can help you apply or you can apply online at http://www.va.gov/ good luck!!!
Reply:Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.
Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.
Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information."
Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs.
If you are a senior citizen, call your local Area Agency on Aging or Office on Aging. If you can not find a listing in your local phone book on the "County Government" pages (usually marked with blue borders), call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find how to contact the Area Agency on Aging serving you.
Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you.
Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you.
Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.
I personally offer free care or reduced fee care or "overlook the bill" care when I know the exact circumstances of a person's financial position. If they have had a medical hardship, for instance, I am sympathetic. You can't come in just looking for free care, though. You have to come in with the intentions of doing the best you can and then I decide exactly how I am going to handle the financial aspect. I can usually tell who is actually trying to pay and who simply wants to skip out on me. I do not usually consider smokers to be in financial need, though. If they can find a couple thousand dollars a year for cigarettes, they could find the same amount of money and fix almost any dental problem. Maybe you can find a local dentist who has the same attitude.

Free or inexpensive dental insurance that covers major dental procedures?
I currently have dental insurance with my employer however, I need major dental procedures done such as a possible root canal, porcelain veneers, fillings, etc. Does anyone know of any programs in the state of Texas that can assist with most or all of the expenses not covered by my dental plan?
Free or inexpensive dental insurance that covers major dental procedures?
Apply for Canadian citizenship. The only problem is you'd have to quit your job; only the lazy unemployed get free everything in Canada.
Reply:LOL....believe it or not the government does not pay for your dental work.
Reply:You're lucky you have dental insurance....whatever it is. Better start saving your $$ to pay for whatever you need to have done. If you're employed, don't expect any free assistance.

Should a 27 Y.O. Single mommy plan to go to dental school this late in life?
I have been a Dental Assistant for 7 yrs and now I am the practice manager. My boyfriend of 3 yrs is a dentist and I love dreaming of being a dentist one day myself. I live alone with my two toddlers. I have saved more money for their college ed than I have for my own. I would basically start from ground up b/c I have no degree. I am doing classes online now but I cannot do much with the kids and my job assisting and managing. In 2009 both of my tots will start school, should I start school too? Should my late start and family/marital status affect my acceptance? PLEASE BE HONEST!
Should a 27 Y.O. Single mommy plan to go to dental school this late in life?
Realisticly speaking, no. You need a 4-year degree which I assume will take you longer because you'll be working and handling your kids. If that extends to say 7 years, you'll still need to do dental school full-time. It also is doubtful that they will accept you because of your age. I know medical schools don't admit people over 26 (I think). If you do get accepted, that will take you a few more years. I'm not sure how many, but it should be in the vecinity of 3 to 5 years. All that time you'll need to have enough money saved for your children, yourself and your studies. This all means that you'll need to be in school for the next 10 years or so, while involuntary neglect happens towards your children and your relationships.
I will tell you that you should try to do the community college thing first. If it doesn't work out for you in the years you're there, you will know it is best not to transfer and continue persuing this goal.
Good luck.

It will NOT be easy by any means, but I'm sure raising kids isn't either. You don't have to give up dreams just because of a family. In fact, this is a great reason to go back to school so you can make sure you can provide the kind of life you want for yourself and your kids
Good luck!
Reply:Yes she should. Better a little late then never. The extra 50 thousand a year (thats alot of loot) at any point in life is going to be very useful. And as for marital status, yes it will effect you in a possitive manor. You will most definatly get more funding being single with two children.
Reply:Why not? Of course you should. You're never too late nor too old to learn something, to gain experience, to fight for your satisfaction, to pursue your dreams?
Besides, are you that sure that you and your boyfriend will still be together some time from now? The more learning you have the better to help in your financial indpendence.
Who told you that 27 years or as a matter of fact even 60 years is old?
I'll tell you a little story or fable:
Once upon a time there was a competition among rabbits, the toughest and physically best had to climb up a greased pole and get the bagfull of carrots hanging there.
Everyone was shouting "There's no way to de this... it's no use... give it up..." etc. etc.
Indeed, all of these tough and sporty guys tried and came tumbling and slithering down the pole.
Finally, a skinny, weak-looking, little fellow came along, walking towards the pole. All the others started laughing, jeering, whistling.
But our little friend walked on, reached the pole, climbed to the top, took the bag and climbed triumphantly down......
Everyone was amazed and they asked each other "... how did he do it?... what does he eat?.... who's his coach?..."
One wise rabbit replied: "...He's deaf! He didn't hear one word of discouragement or jeering that you yelled at him.... and he didn't find it impossible to compete and win..."
So single Mommy, go for it, ignore the defeatists, just do it!
You deserve it!
I wish you all the best success in the world.
Reply:Nope, my wife and I both worked full-time, and raised 3 kids that were not in school while I went to school. I might add that I was a deckhand working 84 hous a week and doing full time classes, and taking care of the kids 40 hours a week while she was at work. No, I didn't get much sleep, and yea, I was a real pain in the asss, but I got it done. Your never to old to improve your life especially when it comes to finances. Retirement is becoming a thing of the past. You really gotta get somewhere fast and start saving. The sooner your a dentist and can start puttin more away the better.
Reply:I am fully in support of your continuing your education. I am in the same process myself- I am a dental assistant who decided I want to become a dentist. I had my bachelor's degree, although not in science, so I have spent the past 3 years basically doing my undergraduate work over again at the community college (it's only $20 a unit). From my experience, I suggest you go for it, but you will need some help. Do you have family that can help you financially, or by providing child care?
Set realistic expectations. It will be very hard academically, but admissions committees do not discriminate on age, I don't care what any one else has told you.
I actually applied this year and had interviews at several schools. I met a 33 year old first year dental student with 3 kids. I know that admissions committees are impressed by individuals that have overcome hardships. I also know that they care a lot about GPA and DAT scores, you need to be prepared to make a lot of A's in very difficult science classes that will require a lot of studying. I think the pre-dental work- chemistry, organic chemisty, physics, biology- are actually MORE difficult than what you do in dental school! (If you've been an assistant like we have, and all the dental terminology and procedures are so familiar to you that you could do them in your sleep, with or without a DDS degree...)
The road is long and exhausting. Committees give preference to individuals that have finished a 4 year bachelor's degree, and they also have limits on the amount of your education that can be completed at the community college level. Community college credits can be difficult to transfer as well, and at this point you don't want to waste any time. I recommend you enter a bachelor's program that has a cooperative degree with dental schools which will allow you to attend 3 years of college, complete all your pre-dental pre-requisites, and then enter dental school (4 year program- there are a couple of 3 year programs out there- University of the Pacific in San Francisco- but it is a very expensive private school). Upon completion of your first year of dental school, you recieve your bachelor's degree, then 3 years later your DDS or DMD.
Look into state schools. They are more affordable. No matter what anyone tells you, you do NOT want to get out of school with over $200,000 of debt. You will be pressured to work hard to pay that back. What if youw ant to work part time? Be a Mom?
I am going to school in Texas- if you move there and gain residency, you can attend school as a resident for $15,000/ year (that includes the loans that cover living expenses as well as tution and supplies). At most other schools outside of Texas, tutition alone exceeds $20,000/ year, not to mention living expenses!
Good luck with everything!

Are there nonprofits or other organizations that assist diabetics to improve smiles with dental implants?
i reenrolled in college 2 years ago.i will graduate,12/08. i am diabetic, have hypertension, and am very excited about living life again. i was severly depressed for almost 17years. i have two wonderful teenage children whom i love and adore. yes i'm married to their father. life's been more than tough; by God's grace we managed to keep the family together so that the children could have some sense of normalcy. My battle scars are my teeth and loss of hair. i manage to conceal both as much as possible. i'm 48 with a new outlook on life. i feel like i've gotten a second wind. my 19 year old daughter just finished her second year at the local community college with a 4.0 GPA. Her brother is a good student presently in the 10th grade. The college scouts are looking at him already. i've seen so many makeovers with gorgeous teeth. two years ago i saw two of wash,d.c.'s greatest dentist. The cost are astronomical. i'm not mad at the dentist. i am desperate to have a great smile. thanx

Hello,
Congratulations for your new life. I understand that the costs are astronomical, but so many people are ready to have it done that it might be difficult to find a place where they make it for "cheap".
You know, dental implants are often considered as the best solution, but other good and cheaper solutions exist. Explore these! For example, a well-fitted partial denture can restore a smile satisfactorily in a majority of patients.
I know that it is possible to get surgery done for "cheap" in some countries... It's common for plastic surgery and it's increasingly popular for dental treatments. People doing it put their health at risk, since the treatments are often done in countries where the standards of care are lower than in the "Western World". Are there nonprofits or other organizations that assist diabetics to improve smiles with dental implants?
Hello,
Congratulations for your new life.
And even though you get somebody competent, the follow-up can be impossible if you have problems... And good luck to find a dentist in D.C. willing to work with a "butched" surgery. U.S. and Canada have among the highest standards or dental practice in the world. Don't forget it!

first where do you live? small or large town, will you work for a corporation or group or private practice? general or specialty? in southern calif you could make 12-16 easily but in order to push thru that threshold you will need to stay with that dr. for a while if you are hired at 16 dont expect to make 30-40 in 10-20 years, like wise if you leave a job which you have held for many years, and are being paid above 16 or 20 that reflects your value to that dr. not to a new dr. whom you dont now yet...
Reply:Depends on DA's Qs and patient patronage of the dentist!
Reply:I dont know about California but in KY DA's usually start around 7 per hour and top out around in the 9-10 dollar an hour range. Not nearly enough for what you know and do. A hygeinist however makes over 20 dollars per hour here. If your wanting to really get paid, check on a program and get back in school. You'll be glad you did 1 day and sooner than you think.
Reply:Personally, I don't believe that the certifications that an assistant carries, is what should decide what her salary is. I have seen RDA's and CDA's who are terrible chairside. Book knowledge and actual excellent chairside skills are two totally different things. You can't base a salary on the things that you mentioned. There are just too many variables. Do you have extensive knowledge of implants? How good are you at making temporaries? Could you make 12 units of temporaries in less than an hour and have them look and fit well?
No offense, but taking x-rays, taking impressions, pouring models, sterilization and normal chairside duties, are things that every assistant, whether they have 1 year or 10 years of experience, should know. It is all the "x-tras" that make the difference between a good assistant and a great assistant.
So that said, what are all the x-tra's that you know or can do? Those are what should determine your pay scale, not the normal things that any assistant should know.
But, just to give an actual dollar amount, I would say that you should make no less than $15.00 an hour. Anything above that, really depends on your specific skill level.
Reply:Ok well Im a dental assistant student myself. So u took Infection Control and Jurisprudence exams too. Did u went to school or u didnt? Depends on the paying an hour, this is what i was told, dont matter how many years of experience u have. If u work in general dentistry u will get paid about $10-15 an hour. If u work in the speciality areas like orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, or with the oral surgeons, u are going to get paid even more an hour than general dentistry. Its not hard to look for a job in this field, because they always need dental assistants.
Reply:not sure where you are but up here(western Canada) certified dental assistants start from $16-19 an hour, i started at $17.50 right outta school, but with exp. id say maybe $22... hygienists can get prob $45-60 easy,

Im a dental nurse, and the female dentist i assist has really really bad B.O wot do i do?
some times she smells fishy aswell how do i approach her about the situation and smell? it's unbareable!!!! i dread going to work everyday! i'm thinking of looking for a new job although i do not want to as i am very satisfied working there other than the smell!
Im a dental nurse, and the female dentist i assist has really really bad B.O wot do i do?
As a health issue, you owe it to the dentist, the patients, and yourself to say something. Such a hygene problem on the part of a healthcare professional will get around the community sooner or later, and could cost you work if the dentist loses clients.
I could be a culture-gap issue, if the dentist is from certain Third World countries, like India. I have known many people from India, and depending upon the social position (caste) of the person, they can either be as hygenic as most Americans, or they can sometimes be very unhygenic. The reasons for this can be many, but if she comes from a culture where water is scarce, then she may have been instilled with the idea that water is for drinking, not bathing.
And that's not only for those from poor countries: right here in the good ol' USA, my great grandparents used to bathe only on Saturday nights, as water was VERY scarce here in Southern California before 1913.
Be as understanding as possible, but do say something to her.
Reply:I am sorry to hear that, why don't you just casually say that a couple of the patients have mentioned a horrid smell during their treatments... That might work., or you could just tell her in the nicest way possible. Good luck
Reply:This is a tough situation. I certainly know, however, that I would want to know about this if I were the dentist. I mean, think about it. Her practice could really suffer since she has to get bodily close to patients to do her work. I know I wouldn't want to be treated by someone whose body odor was overpowering.
Try this. Find a private moment where you can pull her aside. Say that you noticed strong bodily odors during the last procedure and that you weren't sure where they were coming from (you, the patient or her) but that you thought she would want to know in case it might be something she put on this morning. Hopefully she will take it in the spirit of help it is meant and correct the problem. Obviously, you need to handle this delicately, because she's your boss. But you are doing her a favor by mentioning it.
Reply:maybe she is not aware of her b.o. you should tell her as nice as you can say it my hubby's nose is stuffed up 24-7 so when there is a bad smell in the house i have to figure out what it is and take care of it he never smells it and my granddad's nose don't work at all if you are lacking certain vitamins you lose your since of smell so she might just not know she stinks and needs some one to be brave enough to tell her!!!!
good luck I know that is not and easy job no one wants that job but I am sure she will be embarrassed but she should still be glad you told her!!!! really!!!!

Dental Hygiene and furthering your education?
I went to assisting school became a CDA, worked for 7 yrs then went back to school for dental hygiene. I graduate in May. I was planning on furthering my education and wanted some feed back if any of you have. Get masters in dental hygiene, masters in public health education, or just go to dental school?
Dental Hygiene and furthering your education?
Like they say, the more education you have the better.
My mother is a dental hygienist and she's doing just fine with her bachelor's degree. Depending upon where you live and the competition of the field, the Master's Degree won't be necessary, but very helpful indeed.

Pro bono dental care in grand rapids mi?
I am a community heath care worker trying to find out if there is any pro bono dental care in Gr. MI. to assist clients. All are low income, most are uninsured in the dental dept. Some have limited health coverage. Our service helps people to resource.
Pro bono dental care in grand rapids mi?
I don't know of any probono, but teaching schools are a great resource for person's with little to no insurance. My dental hygiene school only charges $25 for adults and $15 for kids and seniors (that includes many things along with a cleaning, such as x-rays). Try looking up dental and dental hygiene schools in your area.

Forgot the primer on a filling...? (For dental field people)?
For any dental assistants or hygienists out there, I was assisting on a filling the other day, and accidently used the bond agent twice instead of primer then bond agent. Any idea how bad this is and what could happen?
Forgot the primer on a filling...? (For dental field people)?
It depends on the type of filling.
If it was an cavity with good thick enamel margins (like an occlusal), then the patient may experience some post-op pain as the filling could lift off the bottom of the cavity.
If it was an interproxmal posterior, then I would advise it being redone, as it is likely to lift off at the thin enamel margin near the cervical edge of the filling, and allow recurrent decay.
In the old days (showing my age), before we understood the need and chemistry of dentine bonding, marginal leakage and decay was a nasty problem with posterior composites, and many of us went back to amalgam.
Either way, discuss it with the dentist. We all make mistakes, but it's what we do when we recognise an error that shows our character.
Reply:I really hope you informed the patient and the Doctor...did you bill the patient ??
what could happen???
you tell the truth and then tell us what happened
Reply:AS LONG AS THE TOOTH WAS SUFFICIENTLY ETCHED BEFOREHAND THERE IS PROBABLY NOT MUCH THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE RESTORATION OR THE TOOTH.
DEFINITELY THE DENTIST MUST BE INFORMED.
Reply:the primer solves the smear layer which affect the strength of the bond between composit and tooth. so you should ask patient to come and refill his/her tooth. if you dont do this, the filling may leak and infect the tooth.
Reply:It will probably do fine. Primer ENHANCES the dentin bond. Remember, we were doing bonded restorations for about 15 years before they invented primer and they are still in place. The enamel is still bonded as well as it ever was, so the restoration will be sealed at the margins.
Just don't make a habit of it.... ;-)

I have been in the dental profession for 26 years, i need a change what career would best suit me?
I love people, I am a happy person, I get results. I am agressive,I am a thinker. I know about insurances,I prefer to be left alone to do my job, I am a self starter.I am a team player. I 've done banking, Quick books input invoices, and paying invoices. collections from insurance companies for outstanding payments. I have posted payments to patients accounts, sent out monthly bills to patients. I can type 45 wpm or so.I've ran monthly reports, I worked closely with accountants. Managed a large successful dental practice. Kept up with monthly budgets. Made collection calls, sent letters, delt with patients problems. Assisted dentist with patients, as a dental assistant, took xrays, charted problems, assisted with general dentistry, root canal, surgery. I am what you would call expanded function dental assistant, which mean, after the dentist numbed the patient he drilled the tooth for filling, crown, etc. I would finish the job, which was valuable to the dentist and his time. order supply

Dental Infection- Need help. :(?
Almost a year ago I was sent to the emergency room because of a dental infection. My face swelled up %26amp; I could not see out of my right eye for about two weeks. My doc told me I had to get the infected tooth taken care otherwise it could lead to a series of big problems. I have yet to take care of it because I have no way of paying thay much money for a specialist.. Now my tooth pain is coming back %26amp; I still do not have the $ for the procedure. I prob should not have waited this long because I know if I dont take care of it, the infection could cause terrible problems with my heart and all.
Does anyone know of an organzation that could give me free help or assist me with getting my dental procedures done so I will not need to suffer anymore nor worry about this. Or has anyone heard of colleges who do the dental work for you with the supervision of the professor?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thankz
Dental Infection- Need help. :(?
Who told you that you need to see a specialist? If it is simply that you need to have a tooth pulled, there are numerous general dentists that could do this.
I am a little confused. You got sent to the ER, but you say that you don't have the money to take care of that tooth? Unless you have great medical insurance that paid for that ER visit, I am sure you know what an ER visit costs. You are setting yourself up for another trip to the ER. You say that you don't have the money to take care of this tooth, but you have had a year that you could have been saving the money to have it extracted. How much do you think this would cost? Even if it was $500, you have had a year to save up for this. You say that you are worried about the damage to your health, but you have obviously not made any effort in the past year to try to save up money and have it taken care of.
I don't mean to sound like a rude, hateful person, but , to a person in the dental field, you are comming across as someone who isn't really as concerned about their health, as they are about getting the treatment for free. This may not be the case, but you could have saved the money in the last year, if this was really an issue with you.
Reply:I don't know where you are, but there should be a college nearby where students under the supervision of a doctor, should be able to take care of you, and hopefully set up a reasonable payment plan. I can say from experience you need to get this taken care of right away. I had an infection in my wisdom teeth that spread to the rest of my teeth through a sinus that runs underneath connecting everything. I not only had to have all of my wisdom teeth removed, but 6 additional teeth, and they are still taking infected tissue. You are right about it posing a serious risk to your health. Get it looked at as soon as possible.
Reply:It's surprising how someone experiences the same things as you do! I had the EXACT same problem!! I was diagnosed with cellulitis and it can spread through your bones and tissue and cause problems. I was given antibiotices as treatment and I also CAN NOT AFFORD A DENTIST. It's been two years since I had the problem. The only suggestion I have for you is to see if you qualify for medicaid. They will cover your dental needs and other things too. I recognized the causes of my flare ups and I avoid them now. I also use orange flavored listerene twice a day to kill the bacteria and germs and keep my mouth healthy. If you remember what caused your infection and don't eat it again and use some kind of bacteria killer in your mouth regularly, (if you already don't), that will help you out. It also dulls the pain. Please let me know how you do with this thing okay. lwilliams2036@yahoo.com.
Reply:Pain! I had an infected wisdom tooth about 10 years ago and it was excruciatingly painful. As soon as the infection went away I had all four pulled. I haven't had a problem since. I know nowadays dentists won't bill you and demand payment up front. Maybe you could talk to them and make out some kind of a payment plan. Tell them you'll sign something and pay a certain amount each month. Crying may help, especially if you're a man.
Reply:I'm going to have to agree with Huskymom on this (as I usually do). Why did you let this tooth go for so long? Did you do any research on what it would cost to take care of this tooth? It sounds like you need to take this tooth out and just be done with it. Normally, that will cost around $200 or so (this includes extraction, x-ray and exam). Now, I don't normally tell people to take out their teeth, I'm a big advocate on saving them, but if you are someone who keeps putting things off, just take it out.
Reply:All, be aware that emergency rooms have state funding to provide charity care. Even people who make a little money and go "over the top" and make too much to qualify for Medicaid can not afford ER care, so this picks up the slack. Unfortunately this option is difficult to find for dental services, but:
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.
Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.
Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs.
Not all states have D.D.S. programs.

Dental assistant salaries....?
I'm currently a dental assistant in a booming NJ area. I know salaries vary by state, but i would like to know what the maximum for a registered dental assistant in NJ is. I've been assisting for 6 years and have recently become registered with the state. I'm my bosses right hand and I KNOW that he will not find someone who works with him so well that easily if i were to leave. The most i've seen offered to RDA's is $25 an hour, which i still dont think is enough if you're such an important asset to a dental practice. Any insight from doctors or other dental assistants out there? I'm competent in all of my expanded duties and highly trained in CEREC technology. I'm almost designing my own restorations. I think 25 an hour is BS. what do you think?
Dental assistant salaries....?
it's funny how every dental assistant thinks that the practice would close without her. $25 an hour is way overpaid for someone with no college and zero investment in the business. dental assisting is a job that literally anyone can do. basically a suction monkey for a half hour and a janitor for the other half hour. the more people that can do it, the lower the salary. i mean, it was #8 yesterday in job searches on yahoo yesterday. really, get over yourself, you're nothing special, cerec or not.

Count yourself lucky for what u are getting and dont complain.

Maybe tomorrow, the dentist will realize that he has spend way too much money on you and let you go..
unless the dentist and you have something else going on..???
Reply:Go to monster.com and see what they say. For $25 an hour, you absolutely must be contributing to the productivity of the practice. If your boss can leave you to create a CEREC crown once or twice a day, maybe you can justify that salary. If you can turn out a temporary bridge in half an hour or less, maybe...
If you think $25 and hour is BS, you must be living in Princeton or Bernardsville or Englewood Cliffs...
Then again, if you want it all, consider going to hygiene school. If you think $25 an hour is BS, even though some are paying it, those same practices are probably paying well over $50 an hour for hygienists. You'd earn your tuition back and make up for lost dental assistant's wages in less than a year.

Cosmetic Dental Assistant?
I'm currently a first time dental assistant and would like to pursue assisting for a cosmetic dentist. Are there any recommended reading materials or how it differs from general dentistry?
There are not many resources out there for cosmetic assistants.
Cosmetic Dental Assistant?
It's the same exact thing as general dentistry, except that the practice will have aroma therapy, possibly give patients hand massages and offer therpeutic type services such as warm pillow, warm towellete after procedures.
Reply:I looked on http://www.wikipedia.org albeit not for professional research, and they do have a passage on the 'dental spa'. (It apparently used to be referred to as 'boutique dentistry' :)
Here are a couple organizations mentioned -- International Medical Spa Association: http://www.medicalspaassociation.org
Day Spa Association: http://www.dayspaassociation.com
For the American Dental Association: http://www.ada.org

Is there a US Government program to assist senior citizens with dental services?
no, usually you need to turn to state services. If you own any property you're on your own
Is there a US Government program to assist senior citizens with dental services?
What planet are you from there is a problem with the government in general.
Reply:Are there any dental schools in your area? You could go to a dental school for your dental needs, and the cost is cheaper because students are doing the work. It takes longer than it would in a dental office, but if money is a concern, you should try it.

I am in serious need of dental work & becoming desperate for pain relief--are there philanthropists who help?
I am 47, newly divorced, trying to get back into the work force after 15 yrs., and hopefully experiencing new relationships as time goes. I used to be remembered by my healthy %26amp; genuine smile...it has simply fallen apart over the years because I have lost or broken almost all of my teeth from my cuspids back in all four sects. I only have 1 upper/1 lower that can chew %26amp; they are chipping away...infections are severe %26amp; frequent, pain is regular. Just walking into a dentist's office costs me $1G every time...I can not afford this...how do I confidently present myself to employers, how can I have a relationship with another person if I cannot feel comfortable with the odor/germs from the death in my mouth?
Aren't there resources/dental pros who can assist someone like me? I would sooo appreciate serious info/open avenues...Thanks in advance.

Call your local Family Services office and ask if they have a local resource list with dentists who sometimes donate their time to help low income persons with their dental needs. In our city, for example, we have something called the Samaritan Center where dentists do this once a week at no cost to the public. You do have to show proof of income, however. It sounds like you need to have your remaining teeth pulled and be fitted for dentures. I hate to say this, but employers have a hard time hiring anyone with bad teeth. I guess it's because you are representing their company and it may hurt their business. Starting a relationship will also be a problem. You'd be better off with no teeth than bad teeth. Also, infections from bad teeth can sometimes injure your heart.
Reply:I help people like you EVERY DAY! With dental work, and making money. I know personally how expensive dental work can be, and how easy it is to put it off because of the cost. If you dont have a good insurance who will help you with that, let me know. You shouldnt have to suffer because you cant afford it. There is an option for un-insured and under-insured people: Dental, Vision, Rx, and Chiropractic plan: $11.95/month for an individual. No waiting periods, no limits on visits or services, no age limits, ALL SPECIALISTS included, 100% satisfaction guaranteed, instant savings, EVERYONE QUALIFIES, on-going conditions accepted. The price is at 1/3 - 1/4 back to US. For example, The Denture is approx USD 200 - 500 max. (depend on how many teeth). The implants are approx. USD 2,000 - 500 and etc. The airfare is approx USD 1,000 USA-BKK-USA (The travel agency that I used to buy from them) The hotel range is start from USD 15 up to 3 stars at USD 30 or more for 4/5 stars hotels. You can buy a meal at USD 1.5 (not in big restaurant). People there can speak English. I would like to recommend one of the medical agency in Thailand that will not charge you for service fee and they have a many deal with many good doctors and hospitals that you will have not to pay for more than the walk in price and sometimes you get a better price. Difficulty becoming a Dental Assistant! Please Help!?
I am a student in the Los Angeles area. I am currently in school taking prerequisites for the Dental Hygiene Program at USC. I just started, so I have a way to go. I have been trying to get a job as a Dental Assistant in the meanwhile, but so far, no luck. I worked at 2 different places as an assistant, and both fired me. They said they don't have time to train. I learned very quickly. I am allready familiar with most of the appliances and setting up/cleaning up. I am also 100% familiar with the sterilization process. I don't want to give up my hopes so I am looking for another job in the field, just to gain experience until I get into the Dental Hygiene Program.
Basically speaking. my question is, how can I get a job as a Dental Assistant (w/out assisting school) and keep it!? What are Dentist's mainly looking for? How can I convince a Dentist that training me would be a good idea and that I really am reliable and a quick-learner and a hard worker??? Please help guys,I'm desperate!
Difficulty becoming a Dental Assistant! Please Help!?
Personally, I would prefer NOT to hire someone who declared up front that they planned on working for a year or so and then leaving the job to enter hygiene school. Even if you get a fully trained and certified assistant, it takes a couple of years to get them on your wavelength.
You might do better just looking for work as a sterilization assistant in a large group practice or possibly as a hygiene assistant in one of the more sophisticated practices. That way, they wouldn't feel like they have to teach you everything about everything (which slows down the whole process) and you'd still be getting some exposure to your future career.
Reply:I always considered 'dental assisting school' to be a liability....not an asset. I much prefer to train my OWN assistants in the way I want them to do things...much easier to do this than have to 'un-train' a person. I look for 'character' in an applicant...someone who will learn quicklyl...be dependable and have an interest in what is going on.... ALL the time.
Reply:I was an Assistant for 10 years before I went back to school. Basically, you need to put yourself out there. Ask to speak with the doctors personally. You are going to need someone that is patient and understanding to take you on and train you.
They are out there...use your charms, or ask if you can volunteer for a day or so just to show your skills, at the same time picking up some and show them that you are excellent with patients.
best of luck

Make up a small bio on yourself. Describe yourself(ie self motivated) state that you are will ing to do a two week unpaid internship. This may well help get you in the door, and then you will have some experience (without beeing fired) to add to your bio.
Reply:My expeience in the field.... if you are friendly entergetic and the patients love you that is total job security right there, you may be the best dental assistant in the world, but if you lack the interaction with the patients, you'll more than likely get the boot.

look in the yellow pages, govt pages for ANY health clinic in your area. Then call them and ask if they do dental as well, or can tell you where to find low cost dental.
Otherwise, you may need to travel to the closest dental college. These are usually a real pain, taking as many as 5 visits to do one root canal.
Reply:Try applying for medicaid or google National donated dental.

Ga. assist in dental cost?
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.
Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.
Reply:where do you live in GA??? In Savannah there is an Emergency Dental Clinic for low income people. Call your local health department and ask them if there is someone local that you can go to. If you need the number in Savannah let me know and I can get it for you:)

Reply:where do you live in GA??? In Savannah there is an Emergency Dental Clinic for low income people. Call your local health department and ask them if there is someone local that you can go to. If you need the number in Savannah let me know and I can get it for you:)
How will I provide for myself while trying to get my DDS Dental School?
I am worried of how I will be able to provide for myself properly while attempting to finish Dental School and earn my DDS. No I am not in Dental School just yet,but driving toward it. I know it's foolish to think of such perhaps. But it's picking at my mind. I'm in my mid 20's living with my family still. I have a girlfriend,we plan to move in together in a few years. These are my plans. Eight whole years however. That is going to be hard without enough income coming in. Will Dental School assist me with doing part time work somewhere so I will be able to provide for myself if I get my own place? What recommendations do you guys give? Or insight from Dental Students, even those who were Dental Students and fended for themselves, would be much appreciated!

that wood be nice but like anybody else have you tried the employment office. You'll have to live like everyone else till you graduate. Then you can disappear into the woodwork and throw around the big bucks and snap your fingers

Dental Hygienist INFORMATION, please help!?
I need some information about becoming a dental hygienist. I am mainly interested in these questions:
I have a B.S. in psychology, do I need a degree in a science related field in order to GET a job as a dental hygienist?
Is passing the state exam enough to get hired as a DH?
What exactly are dentist's looking for when they hire a DH?
What do I need to do to get a job after I finish DH schooling?
Is it hard to be accepted in the DH program?
How hard is the schooling, state tests, etc?
Should I have dental experience (assisting, receptionist) in a dental office?
I am mainly concerned about what credential I will need in order to be considered for a job as a DH. I don't want to finish school and be out of a job. I've already been through this after graduating from college :)
Any inforation will be helpful, thanks!
Dental Hygienist INFORMATION, please help!?
To make is easier, I have copied ad pasted your questions and will answer them individually:
I have a B.S. in psychology, do I need a degree in a science related field in order to GET a job as a dental hygienist? No - any BS will work, but you must have specific courses prior to enrolling in a hygiene program. Check with the school you want to attend for the required pre-reqs.
Is passing the state exam enough to get hired as a DH? Almost... you also must have a likable personality, be professional in attire, attitude, presentation, care about patients, and be willing to be a team player in a dental office.
What exactly are dentist's looking for when they hire a DH? A professional who really cares about BOTH the patients and the business, team player (helps others), never says "that's not my job", works quickly with excellent results, detailed in the dental procedures, clean, neat, personable with patients, and can stay on schedule.
What do I need to do to get a job after I finish DH schooling? Begin interviewing. Most newspapers have listings in the employment section. Also, dentaljobs.com dentalwaorkers.com and other on-line employment sections help connect you with potential employers.
Is it hard to be accepted in the DH program? Hard - not exactly, but it is competitive. They usually enroll based upon a point system. GPA earns points, volunteering in a dental office, previous work as a dental assistant, reference letter from a dentist or hygienist saying you would be good at it, and other items. Since enrollment is limited, they choose the ones they feel will be best fitted for the profession.
How hard is the schooling, state tests, etc? Hard. If you study study study, then you should do fine.
Should I have dental experience (assisting, receptionist) in a dental office? It helps - in applying for school, learning how the office functions as a team, and with terminology. The more exposure you have, the better off you will be.
Good Luck!

What kind of degree could assist a dental hygienist..?
I am planning on going to the University of Missouri-Coulmbia with my girlfriend in the Fall of '09, She wants to study to become a dental hygienist, however Mizzou does not offer a direct degree or training for that career, is there another degree/major that would help her or assist her in the career she wants before dental school?
What kind of degree could assist a dental hygienist..?
"Pure Shooter" (above) has some great points, but if your bent on it, I think biology is good.
Reply:Health Services Administration is a degree used for office management. i was going to get hired to run a dental office. If you want to be a dental hygentist then it would be pointless to do this degree though. There is no overlap between the administrative and clerical world
Besides dental assistant, I don't think there are any. Thats a two year program and I dont think it pays jack.

Dental assist. pay?
hourly pay?
does the pay vary if you work in a private or public office?
Dental assist. pay?
Im a dental assistant student and i've been told that the average hourly wage for a dental assistant is from $17-$22.
theres a difference tho if you are a registered d. a. or a certified d.a. a registered will make more.
Reply:My friend gets around $14.50.. Not that great.
Reply:www.wois.org will tell you all that info.
Reply:Go to Monster.com. That site is huge and should have all the info on any job you want to consider.
Reply:It probably depends on the area of the country you live in. I'm in Ohio and dental assistants start at around $13 or $14 an hour.
Reply:South Florida average pay is around $20 an hour. This is what I made doing temp work (when waiting for my hygiene license.) It all depends on your experience and the dentist. BTW - private offices.

My son was at the dentist getting impressions for crowns the dental assist did it, is this normal?
The dental assistant had to remove the temporaries and put new ones on several times and they do not look that great, is this normal? We assumed the dentist would be doing this.
My son was at the dentist getting impressions for crowns the dental assist did it, is this normal?
It depends on your state, since each state in the US has different 'scope of practice' for thier assistants.
In NY, an assistant is not allowed to take the final impression for the crowns, nor is she allowed to make the temporary crowns...not even if she's licensed.
You can find out if you go to www.danb.org, and look up your state. If you find it isn't allowed, the assistant and the dentist could be fined and a malpractice suit can be filed.
Good luck to you.
Reply:I'm confused, there are temporary and permanent IMPRESSIONS?! I can see the asst. doing the initial impressions of the teeth, but not the actual crowns... You should call and ask, it's your kid and your money, so please don't feel bad asking the staff at your dentist office :D
Reply:I've had a lot done myself. The assistants only clean and take impressions. The dentist is suppose to do the rest.
Reply:An Assistant did my impressions. It may have just been a new person. Don't worry, the dentist won't let her mess up. The only thing the dentist really does is the actual surgery.
Reply:An assistant can make the temporary crowns because it is not something that will be with you forever. She is more than likely trained to do this. The reason it is removed and replaced many times is probably because of what they are made of. If it is acrylic, you have to remove it several times to make sure the product does not "set up" on the tooth. The bite has to be accurate or you will get a throbbing toothache. With that said, the doctor should make sure to check the 'work' and your bite before you leave the practice. Assistants now a days, when trained properly, can do many things. IF the doctor did not trust her, he would do it himself. If you are worried, I would ask the doctor what is the assistants background and training. That should put your mind at ease.
PS if your dentist is still using acrylic for temps...look for another doctor with some new technology. Cerec crowns are the way to go. No impressions, no temps...the crown is made while you wait...no second visit. Check it out on line. Hope this helps.
Reply:It depends on what state or country you are in. If properly trained someone else could take the impression, cause if it is not right when Dr sees it they can do it over. Doc W

Do you have to go to school to become a certified, or registered dental assistant?
I am currently in school to become a Dental Lab Tech but I am still not sure if that's what I want to do. I am going back and forth between that and Dental Assisting. I am trying to found out everything I can about both before I make my decision (wages, schooling, etc..)
Do you have to go to school to become a certified, or registered dental assistant?
If you go to www.danb.org, you can find out what requirements are necessary in your state to be a dental assistant... some states mandate that you have a license, or have your certification, while others do not.
Entry-level salary in my area is $10-$14/hr, while licensed assistants can earn twice that much and more.....with additional independent responsibilities.
Best of luck to you!
:)
Reply:You should ask yourself what would make you happier. Would it be working directly with people to help them with their dental needs--dental assisting, or working with tools and dental materials, but not directly with people--dental lab tech. Dental assisting requires some schooling in most states, unless you do very basic tasks that only require on the job training. Dental lab tech skills would make you a much more valuble dental assistant, but you also need great people skills to be a good dental assistant.
Reply:It depends on where you live. Some states only require on the job training and then a test to be registered.
Call your dental office and ask the assistants there. Also ask if you can come for a couple of hours and follow the assistants around and get a feel of the job. All offices are different but you can get an idea of what the job entails...
You might even like a hygienist job. That requires at least 2 years of college and then hygiene school , but they make the big bucks... LOL!!!
Reply:It depends on which state you live in. I live in NY state, and it isn't required that you have a cert. to be a dental assistant.
Reply:I was a certified dental assistant. I liked it, but there was no ladder to climb - no promotion, no more chance to make more money. I originally wanted to become a Registered Dental Hygenist, but there was a waiting list for the school. By the time there was room, I had changed my mind and went to college for a Bachelors.
If you are thinking of the dental field - I would go for being a hygenist instead - they make more money than an assistant and the schooling is just one year longer. You can look at the community college nearest you to see if they have a program.

How to apply for a job as a dental assistant in a different state?
I'll be attending college out of state and I would like to apply for a dental assisting job. Only issue is, I have no time between my two jobs right now or the finances to make an extra trip up there and find one before the semester starts.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
How to apply for a job as a dental assistant in a different state?
In terms of the Job Market, if you ended up making a trip, there are no guarantees that it will lead into Job. The suggestion that I have is to go through Health care Recruiting Firm in that specific market and see if they can assist you in the Job Search. The advantages are that the Recruiting Firm will have contacts with local businesses, hospital, medical organizations, doctors, so they can always point you in the right direction. The other option also is to go through at the State Organization to see if there are any small businesses that have reached out to them to find candidates.
Reply:One possibility would be to contact the school you trained with to see if any of the instructors have connections in your new area that you could speak to, or if they are willing to help you with job leads in that area. And in my city positions like dental assistant are often listed on http://ww.craigslist.org , that would at least give you some leads to send resumes to before you go. Good luck :)

Is there a website that goes over dental charting in depth?
I am currently in school for dental assisting and we are now going over charting. I think charting is very confusing and I would like to know if there are any websites that go over charting in depth....yeah, i do have a book but I dont like the book. I need something that is a little more plainly spoken and easier to learn....any info would be greatly appreciated:)
Is there a website that goes over dental charting in depth?
All dental charts are done differently, so there isn't a specific way to do it. Try googleing it.
Reply:The 'basic' charting is similar, like charting cavities/fillings (MOD, DO, MO, O, MI, F, OB etc..). You may find a difference with the way missing teeth, extractions and prosthetics, etc.. are charted.
Why isn't your instructor helping you out more? She/he should be going over this until all of you understand it, and not just a few of you.
To even begin to understand charting, you need to make sure you know where your surfaces are on the chart. If you don't, or are unsure, any advice you get on here won't help.
Email me if you have additional questions... I'd be happy to help!

I am currently a Certified and Registered Dental Assistant, but I can't find employment, What should I do?
Every place I send my resume to says they want more experience, well my question is: How do you get experience, if no one will give you a chance? I graduate with an Associates degree for Dental Assisting and I am certified and registered. I don't know what else to do. Employers will not give me a shot, so it's like i went to school for 3 years for nothing. I am really having a hard time with this. Any advice?
I am currently a Certified and Registered Dental Assistant, but I can't find employment, What should I do?
I once was in your shoes but now don't work as a DA because I decided I didn't like that work. However, addressing your question: I had graduated, passed both tests like you have done and it was very hard to get a job and I lived in a pretty big city. I did finally get one job that didn't work out and then another that I had for 9 mos. My advice, based on my experience, really, I know it's hard but keep trying and I'd also say to expand your application region if you don't mind commuting or moving. I have been looking for a permanent job now in a different field for 2 years and part of my problem is that the economy is bad where I live and there are more people looking for work for the number of jobs available only I am not in a position to move. You've got to be where the jobs are.
Reply:Monarch dental. I went there once. Seems like that's where all the newbies were.
Reply:try doing internships somewhere, start off in the office areas. do those types of things.
Reply:I'd try to get my foot in the door with a receptionist position at a dental office.
Reply:Find a diff. job in that field. A friend of mine had the same issue - she ended up taking a job to MAKE dentures...=) Like I said same field!
Reply:Just keep sending in those resume's or you could try that monsterjobs.com....they're supposed to be able to hook people like you right up! Good luck!
Reply:How about a placement agency?
They'll sell you like a new pair of shoes.
Kidding aside, good luck!
Reply:Whatever you do lady....DON'T GIVE UP!
Reply:Relocate to an area with opportunities for your type of skills.
Reply:Sounds like a Catch-22. If there is an association of Dental Assistants, join it! You may be able to network, or have access to information that will help you to find work. I work in the industry, and I know there is also a magazine (Dental Assisting ?) for your industry. Good luck.
Reply:Sometimes finding a job is like PULLING TEETH. Go over that resume with a fine TOOTHED comb and make sure it doesn't BITE. Give 'em something to CHEW on that will make their MOUTH water.
Seriously, sometimes you have to just find a job to tide you over while you wait to get your career off the ground. Talk to the placement office of the school where you earned your degree. They ought to be able to offer some help. Having their graduates in the unemployment line doesn't look good.
Reply:That happens sometimes but take another look at your resume, just maybe it isn't well written. It may help if you had a professional recruiter or resume writer give you some advice.
I have my own business and over the years I have hired many applicants right out of school because their resumes, their attitude and their self assurance made me stop and take a look and I am yet to regret it.
How your resume is written is important. Do not lie about your education or your skills because these can easily be checked.
How you behave on interviews will also affect your chances of getting the job.
Also if you just graduated, check with a job counselor from your institution and ask for advice and a referral.

After you finish an accreditted dental program for radiology what steps are needed to acquire your certificate
The School should give it to you if that is where you took the test
Reply:You should get the radiology certificate from the program. Or..do you mean your assisting certificate? If you want to be certified or registered you need to take the dental assisting board.

What are the salaries for Dental Assistants?
I am a Dental Assisting Major in Texas and I was wondering what the salaries are for Texas Assistants..
What are the salaries for Dental Assistants?
I not sure for Texas specifically... I would go to this site and search Dental Assistants. It will tell you the job outlook, earnings, working conditions, etc....
www.bls.gov
Reply:Since the pay scale is "DOUBLE STANDARD" know that whatever the rate is, you as a person of color will never receive nor make the highest pay rate in your trade. When you find out the amount being given, try asking your employer for a raise and ask for the exact amount of pay and believe me, they will beat around the bush and tell you that the company can't afford to pay you that amount.

Reply:You should submit your resume to leading jobsite like www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com. Also you should consult local placement consultant in your area. In the meantime, look out for an option to work online. Although it wont pay you like full time job but you can make extra cash in your spare time. I am a part time worker doing work online at home, so I would like to share a link where you can make $600-$1500 in a month working at home. The work need to be done is posting/answering a discussion and uploading any photo/image of your interest. For details visit

I will publish few more genuine site in couple of weeks, where you can earn money. You may also write to me at talkofmoney@rediffmail.com (Note: When u are planning for a home based online work, be careful because most of them are scam and ask you to pay initial money. never pay money to any such site.)

How do I become a Dental Hygienist?
I will graduate High School in May. I have a school in mind where I plan to go to a Dental Assisting program but what else education would I need??
How do I become a Dental Hygienist?
It really depends on your state requirements.
However, a dental assistant is different from a dental hygienist. In my state, dental assistants usually do a certificate program, while hygienists hold an associate's degree.

What do oral surgery dental assistants do?
what do they do during an average day, is it beter than gp dental assisting?why?
What do oral surgery dental assistants do?
Yes I think it is. I have been a dental assistant for 2 years now. My first job was as an oral surgery assistant. There's a rush with oral surgery I think. GP you do different things, it's alot to remember in GP. In oral surgery you basically do the same procedures day after day. I loved OS. I am now looking for a job in OS I hate GP.
Reply:As far as it being 'better' than working for a GP, that will depend on you...
Oral surgeons perform surgery all day, which can range from extractions to I%26amp;D's (incision and drainage) to apicoectomies, implants, etc... while working for a GP involves different procedures with different instruments.
The bottom line is that you're still an assistant, and while the procedures differ in each office, the infection control protocol, sterilization, OSHA and HIPAA are still the same.
You just need to figure out which office you would be more comfortable working in...
Best of luck to you!

Should I be a Dental Assistant?
I want to go back to school and I have been wondering about Dental assisting? Is that your job? Do you enjoy it?
Should I be a Dental Assistant?
I don't do that, but I hear great things about it. Maybe it could be a stepping stone to being a dentist or the one who does the cleaning?
Reply:Why do you want to be a DA? Go back to school take a few classes and see if you like it. It is OK if it takes you a little longer to find your fit for a profession. Also try to talk to career services at your college to take a career test to see where your strenghts are
Reply:job with good pay,but being dentist got paid more..
if you don't bad breath, cleaning someone's teeth.. sure go for it!

How much does a dental assistant make a year? Specifically in MI, if you know?
I'm currently attending a university, but it just isn't for me. Dental assisting is a short program, and I was wondering about how much they make a year. Since it is so short I'm also wanting to become a certified nurses aide, how much do they make a year, if anyone knows?
How much does a dental assistant make a year? Specifically in MI, if you know?
If I were you I would check your local papers and possibly a web site like Salary.com to get specific averages for your area.
Where I live, the average pay for a CNA is about $10-12 per/hr or $21,000 per/yr (one certification class required). A Dental Assistant can expect in the neighborhood of $12-15 per/hr $25,000 per/yr (If you are state certified; must go through program, longer than one class). While it could be true to earn more than those figures, they are the rarity.
Hope this helps you.
Good Luck.
Reply:I am a CNA and considered dental assisting. Both jobs only make around $10/hr. Though I would go with dental assisting if I were you cause CNA's do backbreaking work. I am in nursing school right now to be a LPN. It's only a year program, they make about $18/hr starting. Or consider dental hygiene, its a 2-yr program and they start at around $25/hr.

Job Hunting as a dental assistant?
Hi, i just graduated Dental Assisting training in CT and i understand that dentist don't really advertise for DA's so i am not sure how to go about searching and any resume hints would be helpful thanks.
Job Hunting as a dental assistant?
First and foremost, make sure you at least have your DANB Radiology Certificate, since it is illegal to take xrays in CT without it.
Second, dentists DO advertise when they need assistants... you have to look in the newspapers in your area, or check out careerbuilder.com and type in your area.
Third, ask your instructor or director from the program to help you. Most will, since you've sat through the course and have obviously passed........
Best of luck!
